Frequently Asked Questions

Is This a Lye Soap?
All soaps are made with lye, also known as sodium hydroxide. This is necessary to begin the chemical reaction (saponification) that turns fats into soap. When soap is made, the sodium hydroxide (an alkali) reacts with the fatty acids in the oils to form glycerin and the sodium salts of the fatty acid. Although lye is used at the beginning of the process, the end product contains no lye at all – only a gentle, mild soap that contains skin-friendly glycerin. We make our soap the old fashioned way, by hand, in small batches using a method commonly known as “Cold Process.” It is called “Cold Process” soap because no additional heat is applied once the oils have been melted. We use specially chosen seed and plant oils including olive, coconut, canola, palm, palm kernel, sweet almond, apricot kernel oil to name a few. We add other ingredients like goat’s milk, herbal tea, herbs, beeswax, lanolin and shea butter depending on the purpose or scent of the soap. Each soap shows a list of ingredients.

Why do you use fresh goat’s milk?
Goat’s milk has been used for centuries as a cleanser and beauty aid. It is high in vitamins, mineral, proteins and alpha-hydroxy acids that nourish and rejuvenate the skin. Goat’s milk has a pH close to the skins natural pH, resulting in a mild, non-irritating, highly moisturizing soap for even the most sensitive skin. In our Goat’s Milk Soap we use FRESH GOAT’S MILK as our base, instead of powdered goat’s milk and water.

Do you use the same recipe for all of your soaps?
All soaps are cleansing, but some clients are looking for a glycerin soap, or specialty soap. Different recipes are used on many of the soaps and by changing the types of oils used in the soap the end result will differ. Some soap will have different lathering abilities, or may be more moisturizing. Some of the recipes use goat’s milk, herbal teas, herbs, lanolin, shea butter, etc. We do not make or sell any melt and pour soap. All of our soaps are handmade from scratch, even our transparent (glycerin) soap.

How is your soap different than Commercially Manufactured Soaps?
Since all of the soap is handcrafted and hand cut, this will sometimes result in bars that are not uniformly sized. The standard commercially made bar of soap is actually a detergent and not a pure soap. These soaps contain tallow-based oils. Tallow is the fat from the fatty tissue of animal and you may find it listed as Sodium Tallowate. Tallow clogs the skin’s natural breathing-system, not allowing for toxins to escape easily. Commercially manufactured soap lather is a result of detergents which dry the skin. Vegetable/plant oil based soaps allow the skin to release wastes and prevent the skin’s internal moisture from evaporating too quickly. Glycerin, a natural humectant that attracts and holds moisture to your skin, is removed from these soaps and is sold as a by-product. Our handmade vegetable oil based soaps are formulated to lather well and cleanse the skin, all without using detergents. The glycerin remains in the soap and leaves your skin feeling clean, soft, and supple.

What is the difference between essential oil & fragrance oil?
An essential oil is any concentrated liquid that comes from plants, or pure plant extracts. Fragrance oils – There are many aromas that are not available from natural sources, therefore, fragrance oils are artificially created fragrances.
